state fair spotlights - 2020 Grand Champion Barrow - 2020 Fort Worth Stock Show
Grand Champion Commercial Gilt - Oklahoma Youth Expo Dusti's Champion came out of our September Online Sale that was held at ThePigPlanet/Showpig.com. Thanks toTrey Gregory and Cayden Hammock for putting this gilt on feed. I just bred her and you guys did all the hard work. If it wasn’t for you guys and Dusti getting her stuck like she had been doing it for years, this never would have happened. Thank you!!! Deterding Genetics sells everything on ThePigPlanet/Showpig.com and also takes a few to some live sales. Kevin always looks forward to talking to new customers -you never know who might buy that next champion!
Champion Commercial Gilt - LSU Spring Livestock Show The dam of this one is a Dirty Deal sow, purchased as a gilt from the litter bought in The Exchange sale from Bobell. This Dirty Deal sow an her littermate had 5 gilts that were exhibited at LSU and all placed 1st or 2nd in the Market Show, along with Caroline's gilt who was the Champion Commercial Gilt. Prior to taking top honors at LSU, Caroline's gilt was also named the Grand at Louisiana Southwest District Livestock show. This gilt was purchased at the Breeder's Best Sale in Bullard, Texas. OH-LA Genetics sells pigs off the farm and through the Breeder's Best Sale - Contact Patrick at anytime to discuss your next champion!
Champion Overall Purebred Gilt - Oklahoma Youth Expo This gilt was 3rd Generation Mosteller Showpig. This gilt's mother was a Littermate to our Reserve Champion Duroc at OYE in 2019, as well as our Reserve Champion Duroc at San Antonio in 2019, and the boar we raised at Dusty Mann’s “Backdraft.” Her grandmother who we call “8-3” (Feel The Burn x Different Deal) was our Reserve Champion Duroc at OYE in 2018. This gilt sold in the “OYE Night of Future Stars Online Sale”. Moving forward we plan on still participating in some online sales and anticipate to be invited to some live sales. We also are looking to sell the majority off the farm this fall. I think the best thing young people can do is to put all the time and effort into something where people can look at you and say those guys are doing everything they can for success. If you are struggling, correct those issues and keep moving forward. That’s the creed we live by around my house. My biggest influence growing up and who we can give a special thanks to is Dusty Mann. Without him sharing his experience and knowledge we probably wouldn’t have had the success we’ve had in recent years. Grand Champion Market Hog - 2020 San Antonio Stock Show - Shown by Samantha Iselt Samantha's Grand at San Antonio was a private treaty purchase. Berger Farms sells showpigs both privately off the farm, and also at a select set of live and online sales. Look them up for your next champion! Grand Champion Market Hog - 2020 San Angelo Stock Show - Shown by Max Tongate Max's champion is a home raised barrow out of one of his show gilts from a few years ago. Max and his father consign to a couple live sales each year but sell the majority of their hogs off the farm.
Grand Champion Market Hog - 2020 LSU Spring Show - Shown by Olivia Soileau This barrow was also Grand Champion of the Louisiana Southwest District. As a baby this barrow was busted topped and wasn’t a popular option with customers shopping off the farm. Finally Josh Brockman of Brockman Farms said he would take a chance on him. I told him that I was confident his topline would work itself out and said I would flip him for it as an option for my daughters show string. Well, needless to say I won the coin toss and the rest is history! Although our farm has been lucky enough to win LSU several times over the years along with other notable wins at San Antonio, Austin, Fort Worth, San Angelo, Illinois State Fair and the World Pork Expo this win undoubtedly has a different feel to it with an added sense of accomplishment. Those closest to us know that we haven’t added an off-farm female to our herd in over 10 years. Furthermore, this barrow was also out of a boar we raised so actually both sire and dam can be traced back to the exact same female. Lastly and mainly because he was shown by a family member of ours who we are so very proud of! Solieau Farms has an online gilt sale for January borns, and consign to a select few live sales for our fall borns, but everything is primarily sold off the farm. Even though we don’t have a website or social media, we still love to hear from you - anyone is welcome to our farm any day/anytime.
Blaze's Gilt was the High Seller at The Alliance Sale, and also was the\Supreme Champion Overall Breeding Gilt at the 2020 Texas Elite Showcase and Supreme Champion Overall Breeding Gilt at the 2020 Kendall County Livestock Show. MB Genetics sells at a few select sales and online, with the majority of pigs being sold private treaty or sight unseen orders.
Congratulations to Lance Latka on his success with this gilt! Lance's gilt was a sight unseen private treaty purchase!
Grand Champion Market Hog - Exhibited by Kylee Cooper Kylee's Grand (Joe Barreaux as he was known) only went out twice. He was Grand at the Southwest District Show, then a few days later named Grand Champion at the Dixie National Junior Show. There are too many people that have helped us out tremendously throughout the years to name them all. Travis Platt, Steve & Aaron Cobb, and Shane Brinning just to name a few, have always gone out of their way to help us in any way possible. Travis Platt especially, I bought this barrow’s great-grandmother as a bred gilt in 2016 from Travis, a gilt he had bought from the Cobb’s as a baby. We would also like to congratulate Kylee Cooper and her family, they saw the good in the fluorescent green Never Before barrow and gave him the opportunity to succeed. She and her family have become extremely close to our family, that is something we will cherish just as much as the win. Ace Genetics have always up to this point, had a yearly farm sale in the fall around Mid-September where we marketed and sold all of our pigs. We have had a few online sales that have been successful and will probably use that way of marketing our pigs more in the future. state fair spotlights - 2019 As life passes by and our girls grow up, there are moments that make a lasting impression. For sure, the 2019 Illinois State Fair Barrow Show, and specifically, the Grand Drive will forever be etched in our memories! For more information about Bobell Farms and their breeding program visit: http://www.bobellfarms.com/ We would be lying if we said winning the Indiana State Fair Junior Barrow Show wasn’t a huge check mark on our bucket list! Indy is one of the toughest and most prestigious state fairs in the county, and the win was an incredible one for our family.
The dam of this barrow is an elite young (Wedding Night x Outmanned) sow who is a littermate to The Officiant at Small Town Genetics and the Grand Champion Market Barrow at the Nebraska State Fair in 2017. Her grandma would be the famous "Maddi" sow is a full sister to No Mercy at SGI and one of the truly great daughters of Perfect Remedy 4-8. It gives us great pride, in the fact, that there are many generations of our program behind this guy, and it took years to put him together. We are so blessed that families like the Wolfs continue to believe in and support our program. The Ottenwalter Showpigs crew would like to give our sincere congratulations to the Wolf and Hofschulte families on this monumental win! For more information about Ottenwalter Showpigs, click here!
The Grand Barrow at the 2019 Ohio State Fair was a mid-January born hog. Every spring, we have a large online sale featuring our State Fair and county fair age hogs. During this time, Eli and I select 8-10 male hogs that we feel have the ability to compete at the Ohio State Fair. Then, we put them in a choice lot selection, allowing the buyer to have first pick, and then we take the second pick. “Black Eye” (Grand Barrow) was one of the choice lots we had selected for one of these lots! What did we think of this dude when he was young?. Well, here is our description in our March 25 sale. “ 91-5 - Hey if you got a guy who likes big, elevated barrows with extras in terms of bone and foot size and is just a flat good one, then this guy is for you!!! Got big goals for this one!!!!!” This was definitely a family win, because if it wasn’t for my mom and wife keeping this guy on the diet he needed, while Eli and I were traveling, looking up on customers, traveling to shows and judging shows this day wouldn’t have happened! These two ladies’ attention to detail allowed them to be the selected individuals for this job! No offense to Dad; he is a very good groundskeeper at the farm! “Black Eye” was a “Lil Bro” at Heimer’s back on “Party Girl,” which is a Bachelor Party x Gringo sow. “Party Girl” has quickly made her way to the top at our place! She has been a constant generator for us, producing some of our biggest wins in each litter. I want to thank my family; without them, this day wouldn’t have been possible. I also want to thank our friends and customers for their constant support! Keplinger Farms runs roughly a 100-sow showpig operation consisting of predominantly crosses, Durocs, Yorks, Hamps, Chesters and a Berk! During the spring, we sell all crosses through online sales or live sales. We sell most of our pures off the farm! The 2019 Iowa State Fair FFA Market Hog show is no doubt an unforgettable memory for the #WinMor team. We are humbled to have this win under our belts and understand the honor of winning such a prestigious show; as not very many breeders get to say, “Our firm bred that one." "It's not every day that you raise one good enough to win a high-caliber show like the Iowa State Fair. WinMor prides itself in raising high-quality livestock -consistently- and building strong relationships along the way,” says Ron Smith, owner of WinMor Farms. “This win was an example of both our efforts to raise good hogs and value long-lasting friendships. We are proud of this one." This win was true teamwork – we’re thankful Scott Westra saw this barrow's potential at an early age, we could not have asked for a better home with the Edwards family, and we truly appreciate Kevin Thomas for allowing us to use his boar, Rockstar. "This win is a testament to our females and what we believe in at WinMor Farms. This barrow comes from a line that is full of banners, and we are just happy for the Edwards family and excited to add this win to the list of achievements these genetics hold" says Jennifer Slagle, owner of WinMor Farms WinMor Farms is located in Grinnell, Iowa, just east of Des Moines and only four miles off of I-80. WinMor is owned by Jennifer and Don Slagle along with Jennifer's dad, Ron Smith. Their herd consists of mainly crossbreds, along with a few Berkshires, Landrace and Yorkshires. The herd is capably managed by Derek Moore, also known as the man who helps Ron hide keeper gilts in places that he hasn't thought of ... yet! Learn more at WinMor Farms. The 2019 Fort Worth Stock Show’s Grand Champion Barrow’s showman and breeder had a special twist, this year. Banner Young’s winning barrow was bred by none other than his dad, Dan Young, of Young Livestock. Dan said, when Banner’s hog was selected, he felt relieved and some weight lifted off his shoulders. “I finally raised one that my kid could do well with, and it was great to witness Banner’s success,” Dan said. “To see your own kid be successful with what you’ve been planning for years was awesome.” “He was like a little grapefruit in my hand, he was wide,” Dan said. “He was healthy from day one and was super wide. The way he could handle his super-wide skeleton width is hard to find.” Banner named the prospect “Craig,” and the duo was the best combination for each other, Dan said. “Craig” could drive well but he was fast, and Banner’s unmatched patience helped him slow down to make the winning drive. Dan would like to first thank the Lord above and second his wife, Jill, who is the backbone of Young Livestock. Dan would also like to thank Mike Fischer, Kyle Stephens, Jay and Will Winter of Wintex Farms and McLemore Farms. Located in Burkburnett, Texas, Young Livestock sells mainly through private treaty. Young Livestock’s goal as a program is to sell hogs that fit the family’s needs and schedule. Every win, big or small, is special for a breeder. There is so much that that goes into raising and marketing show stock, and raising showpigs can be frustrating at times. As breeders, everyone’s goal is to win, especially as the competition gets tougher and tougher every year. It takes a daunting level of focus, hard work and conviction to be successful today. The win at San Antonio was an incredible blessing. In the Southwest, everyone sets up their best sows for San Antonio, so the competition is stacked! We are very humbled to raise the Grand Champion at such a difficult and prestigious show. As a breeder, there are very few feelings as great as winning San Antone! It is a humbling experience, but it also makes you hungry to do it again! Kaden Mason’s Champion Barrow was a Curtain Call x Man Down. “Hollywood,” as they called the barrow, was always a stand-out! I remember studying him at 8-weeks-old, in the chip barn with Kelton. He was the smallest pig in the chip barn, but he wasn’t short on quality. I remember talking to Kelton a few days after the show. He told me that Hollywood progressed just like he expected and responded well at the end. We knew that the Mason crew would have him looking his best by the time San Antonio rolled around. They did an excellent job feed, training and exhibiting him! We want to thank all those who helped get this one ready for San Antonio. It takes an unreal level of detail and focus to experience success at this level. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen! We also want to make a special shout out to Kaden Mason! What a great run he has had in 2019 so far! I enjoyed watching him show. It’s hard to find a showman more focused or more intense than he is! Kaden shows 100 percent IN THE MOMENT! Congrats and keep it up! Located in Elgin, Oklahoma, Newcastle Genetics aims to raise high-quality showpigs for junior exhibitors. Our goal is to raise hogs that consistently see success every year. We believe that having deep, consistent pig crops is more important than raising a few very elite pigs in a crop. Our objective is to provide pigs that families can buy and achieve their goals. Everyone likes to win. We try to raise pigs that allow our customers to succeed. Karley Willenborg’s winning barrow is out of a boar that is a paternal-brother to a boar Shannon Barbee Show Pigs’ home-raised boar, Stank Monster, who they have been using and winning with. To change things up, Shannon Barbee Show Pigs used his half-brother out of the same sire named, Rambling Man, to get a look with consistent sow line to make some good changes. Rambling Man proved his prodigy weren’t all talk, when it comes to grabbing banners, as Karley’s barrow topped Houston. Shannon Barbee liked the balance Karley’s barrow possessed. He was really cool and profiled really nice in several different ways. He also had a very unusual “paint job” that made him stick out. He was very sound and cocky in his presence, straight in his top line and really attractively built. All in all – that barrow had a very balanced and athletic package. Barbee said, he’s very excited to have this win at Houston, and it’s been fun working with a dedicated family like the Willenborgs. Shannon Barbee Show Pigs is located in Hamlin, Texas. It started nine years ago and has been growing since. Shannon Barbee Show Pigs now runs between 50 and 60 sows and is continually growing and working on developing stock to compete on the national stage with breeding animals and show barrows. “I love competing, working with families and helping them achieve their goals,” Barbee said. “We love to win, but there’s a lot of different ways to win. Working with families and teaching kids is what this industry is all about, that’s the bottom line.”
state fair spotlights - 2018 Congratulations to Tommy Pretz and the entire Pretz family for driving a Grings Genetics bred pig to the winners circle at the Iowa State Fair. Tommy backed up his family’s 2017 ISF Champion Breeding Gilt honors by winning not only the 2018 Breeding Gilt Show, but also the 2018 Market Hog Show. Not often does a showman have that kind of success and in the same year!! Mambo, shown below, had a very successful show season being named either champion or reserve champion 6 times on the ISJS series and was crowned champion at the Louisa County Fair prior to his win in Des Moines. Like the majority of Grings Genetics’ sales, both the of the winning pigs were purchased privately off the farm this year. This summer Grings Genetics had success in 11 states. They enjoy selling pigs and building relationships with great families like the Pretz’s! What a meaningful win for our Lettow Showpigs family! Watching Pierce and “Larry” command everyone’s attention on the green shavings at the Iowa State Fair was special. Larry was purchased at the Chosen One’s Pig Sale in Cedar Rapids, IA, a sale hosted by our good buddies Scott Westra and Nick Smit. This great blue barrow was sired by Dirty Secret, who we lost suddenly in July. Dirty Secret is certainly impacting the showpig industry through his ability to generate build, structure, balance and extras. Most importantly, Dirty Secret has helped us generate great memories with many families. We’ve worked with Pierce and his family for several years, and it was a great feeling of accomplishment to see a pig and a junior exhibitor come together to form an unstoppable team that day in August at the Iowa State Fair. Thank you to Pierce Woodruff and team for being DRIVEN! Watching Ella hit the dirt in the grand drive alongside the Bobell family with her barrow “Encore” (named in honor of Best Man’s last one) at the 2018 Illinois State Fair will be forever etched in my memory as a clear glimpse of the illusive PERFECTION we all chase within this industry! This moment in time spotlighted a barrow sired by one of the all-time greatest sires (Best Man) out of arguably the best female on our farm(Xtra Swag (Lesson Learns mom)), cared for by an elite showpig family (Ben, Haley, Ella, Claire, Alex, Larry & Lori) and shown by a very special young lady(Ms. Ella Bobell)! Lastly but most importantly it spotlighted how our industry can take both a Yankee and Cajun family from 850 miles apart and create a friendship and a moment in time much bigger than any banner! Congratulations again to Ella, the Bobells and the showpig industry! Congratulations to Maggie Cummins and her family on her 2018 Missouri State Fair Champion Overall Barrow which was sold on-line at showpig.com this past year. Thank you to her family and all the families that have purchased pigs from us this past year. We have enjoyed the new customers and markets that selling pigs on-line have brought us. With our wins this year in the midwest we are glad to show that we do not save all of the best ones for our own girls to show and are thrilled with the success our customers have had this past year! Matthew Butterfield drove his barrow named “Repeat” to the Championship honors for the second year at the Ohio State Fair junior show. He loaded up 4 barrows from the Moyers to go back to the state fair in 2018. This barrow was unique in his make up and his cool color pattern made him stand out since on the sow. His dam is sired by Sky’s The Limit x Monumental. What an incredible run for the Gillard Family. Your hard work and commitment yielded you the biggest win Grand Champion Barrow at California State Fair. Thank you to Adam Mendoza, No Limit Genetics, and Bob May Livestock for placing this barrow in such a great home. This barrow was sired by Hot Check and dammed by a Gone Viral daughter that are both housed at Stohlquist Farms.
