man of the year - 2018

It’s not every day that you house a sire so influential that your peers vote him to be the best of the best. Nick Berry of Swine Genetics International (SGI) tells us what it was like to have the 2018 Man of the Year, Dirty Secret, in the SGI sire battery.

What is unique about this sire?
His general build, extra feature, presence and comfort level really allowed him to become a sire that had unique breeding versatility and set his offspring apart from so many other crossbred sires.

Why do you think he had an impact on this industry?
A couple of things come to mind; in an industry that is always chasing the “extras,” he was able to make pigs extra-stout in their feature without sacrificing athleticism. I also believe he was unique in his ability to generate really deep litters of pigs. Often times, the quality of the eighth best pig in the litter wasn’t much different than the very best pig in the litter. And ultimately, his fertility as a breeding boar allowed us to share him with many breeders who had great success settling sows and generating large litters of pigs.

What traits did he pass on to the pigs he sired?

Phenotypically, Dirty consistently made pigs that were stouter-featured and very comfortable in their build. From a breeding boar perspective, his sons very consistently have more aggression and are very active hogs with superior semen quality.

Do you remember the first time you saw the boar?

I do. I had been traveling across west Texas with Jason Lackey looking at pigs. We got back to Lackey Livestock, after a long day on the road, and Dirty made quite an impression on me the first time he stood up in his pen. His comfort level and proportions were immediately apparent, and I had a good amount of excitement about his breeding potential right away.

What do you hope the boar’s legacy will be?

I think the neatest part about Dirty’s legacy for me is that he really validated a lot of what Jason and I both believe in. Dirty came along at a time when Jason and Jackie were making an even greater investment of time in the Lackey Livestock operation, and I think he really helped to add to the credibility and confidence in what they continue to do today. For me, Dirty made a similar impact. I had made a significant investment in SGI and changed careers, and Dirty’s success certainly opened up doors to develop relationships with different breeders. I think for folks in our industry that didn’t know who I was prior to Dirty’s rise to fame, probably had more confidence to reach out to us for help when it came time to breed sows. The Lackeys are great friends of ours, we’re all the same age, making a living doing what we love to do in the youth livestock industry, and Dirty certainly played a role in all of us growing our brand. His legacy will certainly live on through the many elite sons and daughters that are in production for so many breeders and boar studs in our business.

How has this sire shaped your operation?
I think Dirty did a couple of things that were very important for the growth of our SGI brand. First, he opened up several doors to work with new people from all over the country. But most importantly, every time we shipped that boar to someone, I had great confidence that he was going to leave them with better pigs. As a boar stud owner, there is no greater sense of satisfaction. He also allowed us to experience winning. While that sounds a bit obvious, it really helped us create internal excitement for our employees, and I think we saw them grow more confidence in the future direction of our business.

What attributes did this sire stamp his offspring with?

Build, structure, balance, extras and presence

man of the year - 2015

Congratulations to Wintex Farms' BEST MAN, ThePigPlanet.com's 2015 Man of the Year! Best Man dominated the barrow rings in 2015 having sired the champion barrows at San Antonio, Houston, and the Grand and Reserve Indiana State Fair as well as many other winners at all levels. Best Man sired pigs last spring and this fall were some of the most sought after pigs selling online, in live sales, and off the farm. Sons of Best Man are starting to find their way into many boar studs and are starting to make their own mark just like Best Man has done.
