inside the ring

We caught up with Mr. Hayden Wilder before he judges at the 2022 Team Purebred National Junior Show. Check out his thoughts below... |
Pick One: Ford, Dodge, GMC or Chevy?
Chevy
If you could build a show barn of your dreams what are a few things you would include?
I recently bought a property in the country that has an old corn crib which has been converted to a concrete floor, climate controlled shop with overhead doors on both ends. It is a few gates and some Duraplate away from being a solid little show barn for the years ahea
If you could only drink one thing the rest of your life other than water what would you choose?
Ice water is number 1 for me, but black coffee is easily number 2.
Do you have any superstitions? Show Day superstitions?
None that I can think of.
What's one piece of advice another fellow judge or mentor has given you about judging that has stuck with you?
Chad Holtkamp gave a critique on a really good heifer class at the Iowa Beef Expo a few years back that has always stuck with me. It went along the lines of “this is a high caliber class, even the cattle that most of you put 3rd and 4th still have a lot of quality and value. When you’re talking this class in the room, focus on describing and breaking down the positives instead of so much on the negatives. Good livestock are hard to make and they need to be positively complimented.”
This really stuck with me and I try to take that approach when discussing classes on the mic at shows.
Who's one judge you would tell a kid interested in judging to go listen to their reasons?
Many I could list here. Mark Hoge and Jason Lackey are two that come to mind for me as incredible describers of livestock, I always learn something from taking some time to watch and listen to each of them.
What's your showring pet peeve?
Excessive ringside coaching, and a good pig not getting driven to a degree that does it justice. |
