inside the ring

We caught up with Mr. Troy Sloan before he judges the gilts at the 2023 Louisana State Livestock Show. Check out his thoughts below... |
Are you big on grand drive speeches?
I wouldn’t say “big” but I do think it’s important to give credit where its due and recognize the kids.
What is your dream job?
My dream job would be “showpig breeder” without the pressure washing, pen cleaning, or anything else that’s not considered fun.
What is one thing you feel like is important that showman have gone away from? Why?
Lately it seems as if we are all wrapped up in the winning part, including myself. I hope kids are soaking up all the experiences they are gaining and enjoying the ride whether they win or lose
Are you big on first impressions? If so, why?
First impression isn't everything but it’s certainly close to it. Whether most judges will admit it or not sorting larger shows can become mentally exhausting. Getting a good first look is a must.
Who got you involved in the livestock industry?
My parents got me involved in the livestock industry at a young age and I’m very thankful for that.
Tell us about your family!
I work alongside my mom, dad and girlfriend Alicia. We have a dog, Roxy and are excited to add Ralph (Platt Bernedoodles) to the family this spring. |

We caught up with Mr. Troy Sloan before he judges the crossbred gilts at the 2021 The Exposition. Check out his thoughts below... |
Pick One: Ford, Dodge, GMC or Chevy? GMC
If you could build a show barn of your dreams what are a few things you would include?
The list would be long but to hit on a few... everything would be stainless Steel, heated floors and air conditioning with surround sound
If you could only drink one thing the rest of your life other than water what would you choose?
This is an interesting question... I’m going with sweet tea
Do you have any superstitions? Show Day superstitions?
DO NOT mention anything about “winning” until the show is over. Hopefully we can talk about it at the backdrop but if not that’s ok too.
What's one piece of advice another fellow judge or mentor has given you about judging that has stuck with you?
Use the ones you like, that’s your job
Who's one judge you would tell a kid interested in judging to go listen to their reasons?
Kelton Mason. He’s been involved as a breeder, boar stud owner, feeder and show dad. He understands all aspects of the business and is incredibly knowledgable.
What's your showring pet peeve?
Showmen making loud noises to get their pigs to go faster. We are showing pigs not herding cattle. |
