Keri Landry Exhibitor Spotlight - The Pig Planet

We caught up with Mr. Jim Mccoy before he judges at the 2022 Team Purebred National Junior Show. Check out his thoughts below...

Pick One: Ford, Dodge, GMC or Chevy?
Chevy

If you could build a show barn of your dreams what are a few things you would include?
Bright white interior with plenty of LED lights, because you always feel like being in there more when it’s bright and clean in appearance. Also enough additional room to put stuff, because you always have more stuff than you know what to do with. Also a simple drain system that will accommodate shavings in a simple fashion that does not require much maintenance. That is the one thing and every Showbarn we see that always has an issue regardless of the style that you put together.

If you could only drink one thing the rest of your life other than water what would you choose?
G rated version, iced tea with one pink sweetener. Adult version, corona with lime.

Do you have any superstitions? Show Day superstitions?
I don’t really have any show de superstitions, because we have won and lost with things we have done and things we haven’t done. The only superstition I know that they make fun of me for once in a while is whoever opens a pocket knife is the same person that needs to shut that knife because it can cause bad luck. So when we break open shavings bags we make sure we know who opened the knife. No one needs bad luck, that stuff comes along easy enough on its own.

What's one piece of advice another fellow judge or mentor has given you about judging that has stuck with you?

Treat people the way you would want to be treated and be constructive in the things you say pointing out things that need to be changed but be tactful in the process. Regardless of whether it is a 20 head show or a 2000 head show always realize that those families participating it is extremely important to them so make them feel valued for being there

Who's one judge you would tell a kid interested in judging to go listen to their reasons?
There are so many good people in the industry of all ages judging at the present time that would be hard to pinpoint. Of the older generation I would say Dan Hoge would be a great role model as he is for many. Of the younger group Miles Toenjes I think does one of the best jobs in descriptions of anyone his age group. I would say find people who are descriptive and accurate in their evaluations, realizing everyone has their own opinion, and to the point on those evaluations. I like straightforward and down to earth more than I like fluff.

Who's one judge you would tell a kid interested in judging to go listen to their reasons?
I like showman to maintain a good attitude and composure when in the ring and leaving the ring regardless of whether they have stood first or last. I had a showman one time at a county that through his second place ribbon back out in the ring, I picked it up and took it over to him as he exited the ring, I really didn’t care for that attitude.
