What is your background in the swine/livestock industry?
I began showing pigs when I was 3, and showed at local, state, and national levels with my sister across the US. I received my BS in Animal Science from Animal Science where I competed on the 2015 Meat Animal Evaluation Team and the 2016 Livestock Judging Team. Currently with my husband, Zach Cain, and his family we own and operate Razin Cain Showpigs, which markets Duroc, Berkshire, Spot, Landrace, and Crossbred hogs to Junior Exhibitors across the US. Aside from judging at various levels across the country, I also serve on many livestock youth organizations such as the Iowa Swine Jackpot Series Executive Board and the All Iowa Showdown Committee.
How did you get started?
My grandpa owned and operated a hog buying station in Southeast Iowa for 40 years with his brothers so I was born into the pig world. My uncle bough the family farm in the late 1990s and began Moeller Showpigs, which is how I got started in the showpig world.
What are some likes or dislikes you have?
I believe your entrance right out of the gate sets the tone for how the rest of the class is going to go. I also really am drawn to showmen who are intense but make it look smooth/easy especially when finding holes and making transitions. My two pet peeves are when showmen touch the top of their pigs throughout the class because it makes their back tense up, and showmen who get too far in front of pigs shoulders because it cuts them off when they see something in their flight zone.
Brush or Towel?
I’m not particular on either except I do not like when a showmen uses the brush harder than they use their whip.
