Payton Rodgers Exhibitor Spotlight - The Pig Planet

We caught up with Ms. Payton Rodgers, exhibitor of the 2020 Reserve Grand Champion NJSA Gilt (Champion Duroc) at the National Junior Show. Learn a little more about Payton below!

Age: 14

Hometown: Savannah, MO (Savannah High School)

With this being one of the major shows of the summer, explain how excited were you to take home a Top 5?
It has always been a dream of mine to hang a banner at this show.  It was so exciting to see that dream become a reality! It proved to me that hard work pays off and you can do anything you set your mind to.

What was something new you tried this year since you were able to be home more often than normal?
We didn’t really change our routine however I was able to put all my focus on getting animals ready for the show with my school and other events being canceled. With the extra time I worked long hours to try to maximize there potential.

What is your favorite show product to use?
I would say I have two favorite show products to use. The first is Liquid Boost. It helps keep my pigs on track and healthy while on the road. The other one would be Linder 611, as the show gets closer and we switch to this feed it is always exciting to see them change You can really start to see everything come together.

When I grow up I want to be....

When I grow up I want to continue to do things within the livestock industry. I want to be able to help give kids great experiences that so many have blessed me with.

Showing animals has helped me to develop......

Showing animals has helped me become the person I am today. I have learned so much from showing, but the main thing is to work hard for what you want because nothing is given to you. I have also learned that you can do anything you set your mind to, responsibility, social skills, and so much more. One of the biggest things I have learned is to be thankful for every opportunity that you are given and the challenges of this year have been a great reminder of that. I feel so blessed for what everyone has taught and done for me I will forever be grateful.

What's your favorite Barn Chore:
My favorite barn chore is washing pigs and coming up with new remedies to make there skin and hair better.

Who is the person you look to for advice right before you go in the ring for that last minute pep talk or pointer:

My parents are always there for me. They help give me advice to maximize my pigs potential and try and help me show the pigs to the best of my ability. Throughout the years I have also established an extended show family that continues to grow. They are there for me through the good and bad and our time together at the shows makes the experience so much more enjoyable. Two people that are always there for me no matter what are Boots and Jesse Heimer. I have always looked up to them and they are always there to give me advice and help me be the best I can be. I am thankful for all you guys have done it means the world to me and I will never forget the impact you have had on my life.

Favorite Celebration Restaurant after a good day at the show:
We don’t really have a set place that we go and eat after a good day of showing but we sometimes go to a nice steak house with the crew or just hang out at the barn. No matter where we end up to celebrate it is always Boots’ birthday confetti and all!

Favorite Song or Singer:
I don’t really have a favorite song or singer, but we enjoy rocking out to country or rap while working in the barn, driving to the show, or getting pumped up on show day.
