We caught up with Ms. Kate Heikes, exhibitor of the Supreme Champion Gilt at the 2022 Kansas State Fair and Kansas Junior Livestock Show. Learn a little more about Kate below! |
School attending & grade:
I am in the 7th grade and just started thinking about my future career. After graduating high school, I would love to learn more about animal science and livestock judging. Maybe I’ll attend K-State University and major in Animal Science. In general, I am interested in the agricultural industry because it is something my dad and his family have been involved in for generations and I would love to learn more about the industry overall, but I don’t know what that looks like quite yet.
Favorite comment the judge made about your gilt?
All during the Breeding Gilt show at the Kansas State Fair, Mr. Brad Mortenson referred to my calico crossbred gilt, Callie, as “the clowned-up gilt” for her color pattern. During the Supreme Gilt Grand Drive, I will never forget Mr. Mortenson announcing Callie as the Champion Overall Supreme Breeding Gilt by saying, “I continue to ride my train to clown town!” I still get goosebumps remembering that moment and his comment.
Tell us something interesting about your champion:
Callie loves sugary, sweet treats, like pop tarts and marshmallows and she makes cute grunting sounds when she thinks you have a treat. Her personality is as sweet as her treat preference. I also love her color pattern. It’s very unique and easy to find in the ring.
If you could enter the ring to a song what song would it be?
Definitely “Legends Are Made” by Sam Tinnesz. This fall at the Aksarben Stock Show, our family was fortunate enough to make it into the Grand Drive with two of our pigs. Before the breed champions were introduced, the lights went down in the huge arena and producers played a video of photos taken throughout the show of exhibitors in action fitting and caring for their show animals. The sound track for the video was “Legends Are Made” and the vibe and song lyrics really caught my attention. It was perfect for getting you in the Drive mindset.
