Kilmer

We caught up with Mr. Cole Phillips, exhibitor of the Grand Champion Barrow at the 2022 San Angelo Stock Show, Houston Livestock Show, National Western Stock Show and Reserve Champion Barrow at Fort Worth Stock Show. Learn a little more about Cole below!

Age: 18

Hometown: Bullard, TX

Besides winning, what was your favorite part about this show?
CMy favorite part about winning the shows this year is by far the people I am surrounded by and the outpour of support during and before these accomplishments. That is what means means the most to my family and I. Don't get me wrong ... the wins are incredible but without everyone we did it with -- it wouldn't have been near as fulfilling. No one who achieves success does it without the help of others, and I confidently acknowledge that help with a ton of gratitude.

Does your family have any traditions when traveling to a show?
Yes, we always use a certain feeder... it's lucky!  Before we leave the house we are ALL there to load even if we are not traveling together. Everytime I say "Well what do you think" My mom says "We've done all we can do here" and we leave. My mom has a lucky bingo ball that she won a deer with... she keeps in her pocket while I am in the ring.
I always show in the same shirt! Good thing I'm done because its getting to small!

Tell us a little bit about your winner:
The Denver Barrow was always different. Backdrop - Moyer!!
We took a chance on him. Jason Lackey said "I think yall might like him and he will do well at yall's house!" He was not your typical show barrow purchase. He was a ugly boar with a giant rear leg and was what we call "way out there." We decided he had cool pieces and might work for Brinning if he did EVERYTHING right. He grew exactly as we had hoped he would and was an easy keeper. He was very fun to show because he held himself togetheron the move like all show pigs should. I think that one loved the ring as much as I do

San Angelo - Stay Tuned - Cobb!!
There is no good place to start on this one. He will always be one of my absolute favorites! He was outside at Lackeys in a muddy pen. My mom and I walked out there because that is where we found our Champion Hamp at San Antonio the year before. He was in the same pen. There was two pigs in there and we let them out. I told Jason "we want the skinny one" He said okay and shrugged and probably thought why? He was not one you look for. Just a little skinny one with a giant head and a big tail and perfect skeleton. He grew to be an absolute monster legged gangster. He never had a bad day. We always just called him "the Cobb" He was tough, rugged, could walk for days, and just one that you can't take your eyes off of. He is probably one of the only pigs we never worried about because he was tough as nails. He lived outside and would run you over for some pig feed. Showing him was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had in the show ring.  Anyone who saw him was mind-blown and it wasnt any different for Korb. He is one of the best show pigs of all time in my opinion and I was lucky enough to get to show him.

The Fort Worth Barrow -20-1- Intentional from Lettow!!
A favorite from day one. He was actually a bobble head that we were able to work out of him. (Lots of miles of walking and attitude adjustments) He was a project because of his attitude but he was an absolute animal. He had one of the biggest rear legs of any baby pig we have ever bought. He was a man among boys early on until the others caught up to him. He will always be one of my very favorites. He also had a HUGE tail. We love that!!

Houston - Next Intention - Knauth! "HANK"
When I first began showing pigs I always dreamed of one like him. There is no perfect one... but this one was dang close. He had a personality of a winner. We always drove perfectly. I swear he knew he was elite even as a baby pig. My parents were at a deer sale when we bought him out of Lackeys Farm Sale. I had called them and they told me to sit on my hands after a certain number so I did. I was with Tyson and he kept bidding and said "that ones going to Bullard your parents will forgive me later" I am so glad he did... and since then my parents have forgiven Tyson LOL!  HANK was a team effort. I have never been as nervous to show one as was him in his class. One like that is another level of great and I just hoped Thompson and Genter would appreciate him as much as we did. The platform at Houston is second to none and the experience of getting to win on that stage is incredible. A paramount way to end a show career and with one like "HANK" just made it perfect. The best part about it was all of the Lackey Crew staying because they believed in HANK as much we did. That day was HANKS best. He knew it. I swear he was smiling in that drive and he knew it was my last Houston. He was the most incredible animal, elite in every single way and I am forever greatful to have had the opportunity to be his stick.

What class did you have to do the most homework to catch up on from being gone?
All of them!

Least favorite chore:

I don't mind doing anything at the barn. I like doing anything with show pigs. I do not like unpacking my bags after we get home. Especially this year!

What's one thing you really focused on for this show?
This year the main focus has been leaving nothing behind. No regrets. To do everything possible to be successful. The countless hours at the barn are worth every second. Take none of that for granted. This final year wasn't just the end of a show career for me but for my family as well. The success has been an accumulation of many years for my family to get to this point. My main focus was to make them proud and my Lackey family as well -- to set an example for others. To me -- a lot of what drives me is the memory of my friend Cole Gordon and to do what he would do.
