We caught up with Nathan Weisinger of Weisinger Farms, breeder of the 5th Overall Crossbred Gilt at the 2021 Team Purebred Jr National.

This gilts mother on her first litter had the Champion Nebraska State Fair Overall Barrow & Champion South Dakota State Fair Overall Barrow.

Her second litter she had some troubles and only two survived a boar pig and gilt. So right away we new we wanted to keep the gilt as a replacement. So we kept the gilt and the boar pig was on our online sale which was purchased by the Hannon Family and went on to win their county fair.

What's your favorite sow on the farm?
For me it's hard to have just one favorite sow on the farm when we run 200 sows. As soon as I say I have one favorite sow she probably won't breed. The last time I had a favorite sow it was Iconic's mom and then she never bred again.

If you could offer one piece of advice for families wanting to show pigs on a competitive level, what would it be?
Never give up and stay positive!!!!!
If you get beat at the first jackpot don't give up there are 1,000s of shows to go to. Some hogs make great jackpot hogs some make awesome big ring hogs make sure you talk to the breeder and tell them your true goals and stick with the plan.

Least Favorite Ear-Notch
I have always liked the ear notch 5 and I hate the notch 27 - ear looks weird.

What's next for your showpig business? (Upcoming sales, exciting matings, future goals/expansions, etc)
We will have online sales this September and October for the southern shows and the Breeders Cup. We are also really excited this year to travel to Texas for some live sales.

How did you get involved in the swine industry?
We have been involved in livestock my entire life.

Being able to show without question was something we once took for granted. Now with the uncertainty of being able to have shows, how rewarding was it to capture a win?
Every win is important but this year is the most. It means our customers didn’t give up.

With the pandemic, what struggles have you faced as a breeder and how do you think the show world will evolve with the problems we are facing?
Yes we will evolve. We are in the best industry - if one gets canceled we will set up and make sure there is another show to go to.

What breeding decision are you most excited about for the next breeding/farrowing season?
This time of year is the most exciting time. We have 175 litters bred and can’t wait to see what turns out!
