How did you get involved in the swine industry?
A neighbor gave me some runts, which taught me at a very young age that you can do a lot with a little. Being involved in 4H and FFA really ignited my passion for the show pig industry and taught me a lot about basic animal husbandry.
Being able to show without question was something we once took for granted. Now with the uncertainty of being able to have shows, how rewarding was it to capture a win?
No question, 2020 is one we’ll always remember. It has been incredible to see our customers dedication and determination as they competed in virtual shows this spring, and then hit the chips in live shows throughout the summer, giving us glimpses of “normal”. And while it has been fun to see the livestock on display, watching the spirit of these kids drive them forward has been remarkable, and it reminds us why we love being part of the show pig family. The win at this year’s Kansas State Fair with the DeRouchey family was extra special.
With the pandemic, what struggles have you faced as a breeder and how do you think the show world will evolve with the problems we are facing?
2020 has indeed been a year of a lot of unknowns, and the livestock industry we are so proud to be a part of has not been immune. Since our first online sale in March, we have seen the show pig world experience some unimaginable heartbreaks, and then rally together to secure some unforgettable moments for the exhibitors we feel fortunate to call customers and friends. We knew that it would be hard to predict what this year’s show season would bring, and we could hear the apprehension in our customers calls, texts and messages during sale season. We hoped and prayed that “the shows would go on” and the prospects we were offering online would hit the chips in grand style. But what we knew from experience, it’s not just about the destination – it’s the journey. The memories show families are making together this year will last a lifetime!
What breeding decision are you most excited about for the next breeding/farrowing season?
The foundation of our breeding philosophy is function. The show pigs we produce compete because they are complete, with just enough “extreme” to catch a look in the ring. The goal of our genetics is to not only work in a breeding program, but also bring our customers to the backdrop at local, state and national shows. We are excited to incorporate some new pedigrees in to our crosses, Yorks and Berks, as well as introduce some elite purebred Duroc and Spot bloodlines in to our operation. 2021, we're ready for you! |
