If you have a person starting out, what is one tip on facility design you would suggest to them?
Proper Drainage in your barn will help a great deal.

What do you consider the most influential sow/boar in the showpig industry or your herd?
Personally in our herd it would be Dirty Secret.

My favorite barn snack is...

Spark & Cheez-Itz

In 2021 I most look forward to...

Keri Landry Exhibitor Spotlight - The Pig Planet

We caught up with Mr. Jordan Leatherman of Final Drive Genetics, breeder of the Grand Champion Market Hogs at the 2020 Missouri State Fair and 2020 Arkansas State Fair.

Pedigree/Genetics of Champions:
GRAND - MO STATE FAIR
- Dirty South x Dirty South x Hillbilly Bone (74-8)
- Fun Fact, the Summer that we moved from Indiana to Arkansas the Hillbilly Bone sow farrowed in the trailer on the way down and we only saved one pig. The mother of this barrow.

GRAND - AR STATE FAIR
- Kingpin x Dirty Secret x Swagger (12-37)
- Sow is Dirty South's Littermate Sister & is Kracker's Mom

How did you get involved in the swine industry?
Like many in the industry, my family started out showing at the County Fair level my sisters first year of 4H in the early 90s and from there it turned into my dad raising them and it has evolved over the years into what FDG is today.

Being able to show without question was something we once took for granted. Now with the uncertainty of being able to have shows, how rewarding was it to capture a win?
Certainly anytime you can win any show at any level is rewarding as the competition at every level has increased dramatically in recent years. To pull off winning a State Fair in a year where there wasn't a guarantee there would be a State Fair makes you extra thankful and grateful to work with top notch families that never stopped putting in the time and effort with their projects.

With the pandemic, what struggles have you faced as a breeder and how do you think the show world will evolve with the problems we are facing?
The day to day as a breeder hasn't seen a large difference from what we were normally accustomed too. The biggest uncertainty is certainly at sale time, but it has been amazing to see the enthusiasm of the youth and their families to put animals on feed regardless of what the future may or may not hold.

What breeding decision are you most excited about for the next breeding/farrowing season?

I thoroughly enjoy breeding season as it gives us a chance to hopefully improve on what we did right the previous season and to try and to correct our mistakes of what may have not worked as well. We strive to make every set deeper than the previous one as we not only want to try and hit that Major Win but give every kid that purchases a pig from us a chance to have success at every level.
