Pedigree/Genetics of Champion:
Timings Right x Organized Chaos x He's Got It
Mother of this litter was Champion in the open show 2019 Exposition raised by Travis Platt and she's outdone herself in just her first 2 litters! In her first litter, she raised the Champion Barrow at KC 2020, Reserve Landrace barrow Eastern Regional, Reserve Champion Landrace gilt Western Regional 2020 and a few others that won jackpots etc!
This gilt is a full sib to that litter!
What's your favorite sow on the farm?
With so many sows of so many different breeds, it's hard to pick a favorite! Unforgettable's mom and sisters (most recently the mother of Champion Duroc Gilt at Houston 2021 and 3rd overall Duroc Gilt San Antonio 2021 and heart of Texas 2020), The Shotgun Wedding berk sow (most recently the mother of Jacobson's Berk Gilt 2020 National JR show 3rd overall Berk Gilt), 4-15 Landrace sow (most recently the mother of Douglass's Champ Landrace Barrow and 4th overall at Louisville 2019 and 3rd overall Landrace gilt OYE 2020). And have several more young sows that are doing an awesome job that are sure to be in the conversation in the next few years!
If you could offer one piece of advice for families wanting to show pigs on a competitive level, what would it be?
Be hard headed. Strange piece of advice huh? Hear me out. Someone says your pig isn't what it needs to be, what do you do? You listen to their critiques and go home and put in the time, hard work, and effort that it takes to get it where it needs to be. Don't just take what they say and give up. Someone says your showmanship skills aren't up to par; don't get down on yourself or think you aren't good enough. Work with friends, parents, neighbors, older 4H/FFA members and make your craft the best it can be. Ask for constructive criticism and advice. The nice thing about this business is that most folks are willing to help you out if you simply ask. Not all days are perfect days in the show ring but the way your present yourself and act really shows your character and determination. Be an inspiration to others by gracefully losing and then reset your focus at home. So, in short, be hard headed. Not in the sense of being unwilling to listen to people, but to not ever take the negativity too much to heart. Use the criticism as a fuel to the fire that drives you. And next time, you'll give it your best shot to hang the big banner. At the end of the day, our best shot is really all we've got.
Favorite or Least Favorite Ear Notch?
Not sure that I have a favorite notch, but my least favorite notch is definitely 0-0 because someone forgot to notch that one on the sow!
